Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) has announced that its first flight validation test will take place today, marking a major milestone ahead of the airport’s commercial opening in April 2025.
A test flight from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) is set to reach the Jewar site at 12 pm. Officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will oversee this technical assessment as per Hindustan Times.
Key Flight Test Details
- The test flight will stay airborne for 1.5 hours over the airport to gather critical data.
- The information collected will help evaluate runway performance, airspace coordination, communication systems, and emergency response protocols.
- AAI officials will collaborate with the Noida International Airport staff to complete the process, and the data will be sent to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for review.
Timeline for Validation
Originally scheduled for November 15, the test will include take-off and landing on the airport’s 3.9-kilometre operational runway. The assessment will focus on runway performance, airspace coordination, communication systems, and emergency readiness. The data will be submitted to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for review.
The test will be conducted by AAI’s technical team, in partnership with Noida International Airport staff.
The project, managed by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), a Zurich International AG subsidiary, is over 85 percent complete in its first phase. The airport’s terminal building is nearing completion, while equipment installation is next on the agenda.
- Air Traffic Control (ATC): The 38-metre-tall ATC tower is ready and will undergo communication systems testing during the trials.
- Runway Systems: The Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI), essential for low-visibility landings, were successfully calibrated in October 2024.
“We are on track to meet the April 2025 deadline for commercial operations. All clearances and flight trials are progressing as planned,” said Shailendra Bhatia, NIAL’s nodal officer, as quoted by Hindustan Times.
Spread over 1,334 hectares, the airport is being developed in four phases, with a total investment of Rs 29,650 crore. The first phase, costing Rs 10,056 crore, is designed to handle 12 million passengers annually. Zurich International AG will manage the airport for the next 40 years.
