The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) recently announced plans for an enormous extension of the Pink Line Metro line that will stretch from Kalena Agrahara (formerly Gottigere) to Kadugodi Tree Park. It will be the city’s longest metro route, spanning approximately 68 kilometres with nearly 50 planned stations.
The goal of this vast extension is to connect major residential, industrial, and technological hubs by navigating through key suburban and IT-rich areas like Varthur, Sarjapur, Jigani, Anekal, and Attibele. Upon completion, it is expected to improve connectivity throughout south-east Bengaluru, cutting down on commuter traffic and time for thousands of commuters.
The Project Details
The project is already well underway, with a 21.3 km leg from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara under construction, though the whole expansion has not yet begun. The intricacy and scope of the engineering work required is shown by the combination of 13.8 km of underground digging and 7.5 km of elevated rail in this stretch.
According to BMRCL, these new projects are still in the planning stages. Feasibility studies are coming to a close, and then a Detailed Project Report (DPR) needs to be approved by the federal and state governments.
The proposal also includes improved infrastructure outside of stations and tracks: the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) plans to build a stadium with 90,000 seats close to Attibele, and the redesigned Pink Line would provide easy access for event goers.
Bengaluru City Rejoices
Residents of the city have reacted with enthusiasm. Many anticipate that the extensive route will greatly reduce traffic on Bengaluru’s roadways by making transportation between the suburbs and IT hubs easier, faster, and more efficient.
The extension is a bold step forward for urban mobility in Bengaluru. In addition to providing extensive mobility, the new Pink Line lays the groundwork for the metro network of the future by connecting the city’s south, southeast, and IT regions.
