Primary Components Involved in Flex PCB Manufacturer

Flex PCBs are an excellent option for applications that require flexible connections. They are used in the automotive industry for example to connect sensors and other components, especially those that need to withstand vibrations. They can also be used in medical devices and smart home gadgets, since they provide better flexibility than rigid circuit boards. They are also lighter and smaller, which is an advantage when it comes to space-limited applications.

The first step of a flex pcb manufacturer process is to use PCB layout software to design the layout of the board and create traces and pads. This can be done by collaborating with the mechanical or additive manufacturing engineer to make sure the layout will fit into the device it will be used in. The flex circuit board material and copper plating are also determined at this point.

Once the flex layout is set, the layer structure can be designed. The layers can be either single-sided or double-sided, and there are different thickness options for the flex circuit board material. For a single-sided flex circuit board, the thickness can be up to 0.15 mm, while for a dual-layer one, it is up to 0.26 mm. The choice of the thickness will depend on the needs of the specific project and can affect the cost of the final product.

During the copper plating phase, the conductive copper is applied to the PCB. The plating is usually carried out using chemicals and the copper material can be coated with a protective material such as coverlay or silkscreen. Besides this, the conductive copper can be covered with metals such as gold to make it more durable and increase its electrical conductivity.

After the copper plating, the flex circuit board is sent through the baking process to remove any moisture. Once this is complete, it is ready for solder paste printing. In this stage, the bare circuit board is screen printed with solder paste using a stencil. A tool called a squeegee blade is used to apply the required force to move the paste over the stencil.

For a flex circuit board to be suitable for high-speed assembly, it must be plated with copper. This is done to protect the circuit board against oxidation and ensure it can operate within the temperature range of the component it will be attached to. Typically, the thickness of the copper plating is about 1 micron.

Another important consideration is the number of layers in a flex circuit board. There are many different types of flex circuits available, some with as few as two layers and others with as many as 20 or more. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the right number of layers will depend on the project’s size and the complexity of the underlying components. In addition, if the circuit will be bended or folded, the flex circuit board should have rounded edges to minimize tearing. Alternatively, it can be strengthened with what is known as a stiffener, which is a rigid piece of material (usually FR4) added to the flex circuit board to increase its strength and durability.
